Official NBA Guide : 2001-2002 Edition

Cool Book (even if you're not a basketball lover).
This book is awesome. It talks about the past and present of a game they call "basketball." And, if you're a basketball lover, or you like watching basketball on TV, this is the book for you. It has directories of the front-office (like the GM) of each team and it has schedules of every game of every team. This is an awesome book, but if you just "hate" basketball, just get a biography of some famous basketball player and read it. You don't have to do whatever I say, but it works. I tried it on my sister. She hates basketball and I gave her a biography and she loved it. I also tried it on a couple of my friends. It works on them too. I also wouldn't get the book if you hate numbers. There are a lot of numbers in this book. Thanks for reading my review on a great "if your really bored" book!

The Other Side of Silence: Women Tell About Their Experiences With Date Rape
Published in Hardcover by Avocus Pub (October, 1997)
Author: Christine Carter
Average review score:

a "must read!"
This book is great because there are stories by real women about their experiences with date rape. There are also chapters written by professionals like a psychologist, doctor, and academics. There is even a story by a guy who thinks he committed date rape.

This book is the best I have read on the subject of date rape and should be read by all young girls in high school and/or college to think about this most prevalent form of rape in our society. It is also very important for boys to read this book to explore their (mis)conceptions about sexuality and resistance by women.

Parents, buy this book for your adolescents!

Painting Techniques of the Masters
Published in Hardcover by Watson-Guptill Pubns (March, 1978)
Authors: Hereward Lester Cooke, National Gallery Of Art, and J. Carter Brown
Average review score:

A profound text allowed to languish out of print!!
I am an artist who has persued the knowledge of classical drawing and painting, (as well as the joys of modern art)for at least a decade, and I believe that along with Robert Beverley Hales masterworks, this great book by Hereward Cooke is one of the most profound I have ever encountered.
It is not one of the typical "how to" art tuition books so prevalent now, those that are really just a sort of long winded advertisement for the artist/writer (and sad to say, often a very embarassing and mediocre ad at that).
This book is not for the hobby painter who just wants a pretty effect. This is a serious and profound study of the thousands of ideas , both simple and subtle, that painters have developed over umpteen generations, and which in the 20th century were almost lost to us. But this is the 21st Century!! Lets learn to match inspiration with inspired technique and understanding. Watson and Guptill really should reprint this gem, REALLY!!

Comprehensive and Authoritative Work on Community Policing
The Police and the Community is the most comprehensive book on the market looking at community policing and its wide-ranging impact. It goes beyond a simple description of what community policing is. Rather, it provides a comprehensive view with reference to a wide range of social concerns and the police role and response. Interesting topics are included ranging from racism to police brutality to international perspectives.

The Politics of the Environment : Ideas, Activism, Policy
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (December, 2001)
Author: Neil Carter
Average review score:

Excellent text
This book provides an excellent introduction to environmental politics. An overview of environmental philosophy is offered, providing the backdrop for an extensive discussion of the unique hurdles faced by both Green parties and interest groups, and those trying to craft public policy. The author does an excellent job of covering a wide range of topics and provides a useful overview of each, while at the same time offering jumping-off points for interested readers to further pursue individual topics. Highly recommended for students as well as the casual reader.

The Prayer Tradition of Black People
Published in Paperback by Judson Pr (March, 1976)
Author: Harold A. Carter
Average review score:

A Rare Study of Black Religious Life
The Prayer Tradition of Black People by Reverend Harold Carter of New Shiloh Baptist Church (Baltimore) is an excellent study, based on Dr. Carter's dissertation. (St Mary's Seminary & University has a copy of his dissertation, but of course regrettably it cannot be borrowed.) It is also regrettable that this scholarly book that examines the prayers and prayer life handed down by nineteenth-century enslaved American blacks probably has not been issued anew since its publication in 1976.

Dr. Carter reproduced copiously the prayers that were copied by folklorists or prayers secured from interviews of religionists or recalled by observers of religious services of postbellum and Southern blacks in the 20th-century. The Rev. Dr. Carter provides an excellent analysis of the form, technique, biblical source, and style of these prayers. Many of which are still in use today because they have been passed down orally in the rural districts of the South from one generation to the next during the annual summer revivals.

This short book, probably about 145 pages, has no rivals. Few if any have performed or continued Dr. Carter's study. This book indeed should be read and that if it is out of print Dr. Carter and the publisher should be encouraged to bring out another edition.

This is an excellent work for seminary or bible students or just regular lay people or for students interested in the linguistic or literary history of African-Americans. Even an old copy is better than none at all. Grab a copy, even one that has been marked up, and check out this wonderful work on black religious life.
